Don’t lie. You’ve had second thoughts about going out with ‘Quinisha” or ‘Twinika’ just because of the name. Admit it. We talk so often about ‘urban names’ and how it impedes the hiring process, but what about the affect on dating?
I can say honestly that I’ve never dated a man with an over – urbanized name (is there a proper term for what I’m trying to say here?) and I can’t tell you if it’s because I’ve never met that man or because I have, but laughed in his face (thus ruining my dating opportunity) when he told me his government name was ‘Lil’ Cuz’
Could you imagine if our President chose ‘Ferraria Jenkins’ as his wife instead of Michelle? (Shame on all of you out there saying to yourself, “what’s wrong with Ferraria?”)

Hmmm…I like where you’re going with this. As someone whose name often makes folks (including women I’m trying to pick-up) sing that wack @$$ song “Ricoooo….Suave…” I know that there is MUCH in a name. And while “a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” who wants to have anything to do with a flower that’s too hard to pronounce? Can you imagine telling a florist…”yeah, gimme that flower that looks like a tulip but nicer” every, single time you called to order the thing from them?! B/c instead of “rose” the thing was called “quintasha.” I’m stearing clear of the chix with the long/ethnic sounding names. Going for Debbie, Tracey, and the easier ones.

How absurd…..do you realize the president’s name is “Barack Hussein Obama”?…..so while you’re concerned about the first lady having a “normal” name…..you forgot that she chose to date a man named Barack…….you can’t get more urban than “Barack Hussein”

Barack Hussein isn’t exactly an ‘urban’ name…urban meaning, ghetto…
I don’t think I’d have a problem dating a man with a ghetto name – it would depend on his attitude, if his attitude matched his name we would have a problem…

Most of these “urban meaning, ghetto” names have African/Arabic roots. So, yes Barack is an urban name. One must understand these names increased in popularity during the black power movement……ignorant western society vilified and considered them fit for non-conforming “ghetto” dwellers…..keep drinking the Kool-aid……one last thing, Rico…..while you’re checking for Tracey….we’re checking for Beyonce

To me it’s not an issue of urban/non urban. I have a hard time dating someone who’s name I don’t like. Don’t get me wrong, I WILL still date him but certain names just make me cringe. Frank, Otis, and Marques for example.

Studies show that we are subconsciously attracted to names with sounds that are similar to our own (Michelle likes Michael, Jenna likes Jason) So maybe those of us who are turned off by ghetto names aren’t being bigoted — we’re just seeing the results of subcounscious bourgie self-preservation. . . or something.

This guy would date a Quinisha but only if she had enough other stuff going on to compensate. Say what you will, but attraction is not a choice. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2009-02-10-attraction_N.htm

This is so stupid and reeks of a certain, latent classism. Talk about judging a book by its cover!

If Quinisha is attractive, independent, and wasn’t crazy, she’s in the game. Nobody said I couldn’t introduce her as “Nisha” to those that I deemed pronunciation-challenged. To say someone’s name is too anything is short-sighted. I’ve met plenty of people with “normal” names that weren’t worth memorizing.
